I’m still working on some new content for this blog and my thoughts are to offer some guest blogger spots to some friends and possibly some other webmasters from some of the major forums like Digital Point Forum or NamePros. Lots of content writers there looking for a place to drop an article in exchange for a link or two back to there site.

Guest bloggers are so much better than syndicated articles and free content sources like RSS feeds or directories. With a guest blogger I can offer unique fresh articles on topics related to my blog and it may only cost a couple of outbound links to a quality partner site. For real content development I would need to pay for top end articles but with a guest blogger you can offer spots to newbies looking for an audience and get loads of fresh content at little no cost. You may even find a boost in readership with a guest blogger and their own audience or the updated relevant articles just might draw new readers if you can find quality writers for your blog niche.

Swapping guest blogger spots with some related blogsin your niche is a great way to open up your market to new readers and a simple way to score some inbound links from a quality or authoritative source. If someone offers you a guest blogger spot on a well ranked blog would you take it? I would. So, anyone looking for a place to write an article or two in exchange for some links and premium placement on our marketing blogs?

This article was written a week before it was published using Wordpress Post Timestamp as discussed in our last article.

Keeping your blog up to date with Wordpress Post Timestamp

August 8th, 2007

I’ve been negligent in keeping up the posting on this blog and there really is no reason. The tools are available to me to keep it updated almost automagically and having an article appear on a weekly or even bi weekly schedule would do wonders for keeping fresh content on the site and a fresh article for review in between our larger more detailed reviews.

With this Wordpress blog I have the ability to write a couple of articles right now when I have the time and attention. I can schedule the posting and have a new article appear just about whenever I wish using the Post Timestamp feature for available for every new post. This article will be the first and I think I’ll set a schedule for one new article each week for the next month. I can spin out a couple new short reviews on affordable website marketing techniques and how best to use them for your site. Wordpress and the magic of Cron will keep the site updated at a somewhat regular schedule and all is well.

Why the need to automate content on the blog? Well some folks like to see regular posting on a blog before they will pay you for a post or link on a site and when we neglected to update this site for over a month one of our advertisers commented on it to us. These ad buying guys are quick to notice a stale site and they wanted to know what I was going to do about it. So here goes an article on how to keep your blog readers happy with an occasional article on topic and your advertising clients hapy with some fresh new content to advertise on.

Seemant Kulleen - Post details: For Love or Money

There’s more to be said on this subject, so I’ll continue that in the next article.

Oh, I almost forgot to explain the cryptic title of this post, which is all about concierge services. It turns out that The Concierge was the working title of that Michael J. Fox movie. I could probably dedicate an entire series of blog posts on Mr. Fox, who’s simply fantastic, but I’ll leave you with this: why isn’t Family Ties on DVD yet?

Advocacy Project Blogs - 2007 Fellow: Leslie Ibeanusi - Post details: Delicate Issues

“We need to organize like a town hall meeting where we get Nigerians and other Africans to meet on this issue. Something needs to be done!” said one of the guys. “I’ve heard this before,” I thought to myself, thinking back to Ibo Union meetings that started with a need to fix an issue, but ended in shouting and yelling. “Hmmm, that’s a good idea,” I responded. “But what’s our goal? Who are we trying to reach?” The buzz in the room grew quieter as I spoke. Now, I could pretend and say that they were fascinated by the wisdom that poured from my mouth, but I think they were just intrigued that this Naija girl had such an American accent.

Spam has killed the comments

June 24th, 2007

We now get 100% comment spam on this site and I’m about to drop the entire comments system just because I can’t deal with it any longer. What idiot still thinks that comment spam works I don’t know but I’m certain they think it’s worth the effort when all they have done is killed one of the best features of web 2.0.

Having a comments section on a blog is a great way to engage readers but if the system is polluted with crap constantly then whats really the point? I mean how many offers for free porn videos can a website really need?

Open source stats application helps manage website marketing

May 21st, 2007

Tracking your marketing efforts is the key to efficient campaign management and squeezing the most from your online advertising dollars. Finding out which campaigns are working and which ones are not is as important as the campaign design itself. A six month ad campaign can be adjusted mid stream which allows you to fine tune the campaign and run only the most productive ads. If something isn’t working why keep trying it?

With our sites we run a mix of stats programs that help us judge where our best traffic sources are and how to better focus our sites content to our web visitors. Some of our site run the Google Analytics script which does an amazing job of tracking every minute detail of your website visitors. For the most detailed reporting from a free resource you have to get a Google Analytics account. One draw back to using the Google tools is that they now know who you are and each site you own and their relationship. You must now be extra careful with cross linking your sites and duplicated content so as not to offend the might GoogleBot. Linking to your own sites is ok but make certain it’s only a small percentage of your total inbound links to each site.

The Google tool is a javascript that must be placed in each page you wish to track on your site. Some users will have java disabled and will not be tracked by your script. This is where a different stats tool comes in handy. As you know every time you visit a website you are tracked. Identifying information such as your IP address and search keywords are saved in logfiles on every server and a logfile analyzer may be your most valuable marketing tool. There are loads of logfile analyzers but we have AWStats installed on our primary Unix based server and we’ve been very happy with it’s performance. We have used a paid analyzer some years back that barely offered the features we get in this open source application available for download free from SourceForge.net. For free it offers a different view of website visitors from that offered by the Google analytics script as it tracks every visitors and their referring source as well as paths or “funnels” of traffic in your site leading to your goal page or shopping cart.

AWStats Screenshot
AwStats

AWStats just happened to be what our hosting company Webair.com offered for free so we took it and it’s become a key part in our marketing efforts. Sites are checked almost daily for trends and input on where a sites visitors come from and as important where they go also. We have use a product from WebTrends in the past which offered similar tools at the cost of over $400 per year and we we’re not impressed with the performance or value at that price when compared to what we get fro free from AwStats. The current stats setup is easily accessible online and offers instant access to site information. This is great to track paid advertising campaigns through the use of tracking url’s and also helps us to manage things such as keyword search trends and visitor viewing habits. With AWstats we can watch our free traffic sources and determine what pages in our site are the most active. We can tailor ads on these pages to match the search queries and increase ad conversions and offer a better experience to our visitors as well. In the end it works out great for everyone.

Some prefer more customized reports like those available in Clicktracks.com logfile analyzer. You can create a myriad number of custom reports and break down traffic funnels and site hot spots pretty easy with this desktop application. You do have to download the logfiles and view an archive of data with this software which has some disadvantages to some users. There are scheduling tools built in and the software was a great value for us at the time but we no longer need the depth of reporting as we no longer provide services to other clients as we did in the past. Most of our work is in house and on own projects. Clicktracks is a nice logfile program but more than we need right now.

The information gleaned from these applications and services is vitally important to us as a marketing company and to me personally. Watching the site trends is great fun for me and I truly enjoy watching them daily. It’s cool to see how people visit our sites and watching them as they move around and finally through our sites. I use this information to keep our sites content fresh and focused on not only on what our visitors are looking for but on what they are not looking for also.

Google Applications and Browser Sync

May 14th, 2007

Google Applications and Browser Sync

This will be my second blog post using the Google Docs and tools online. I’ve really jumped into their new suite of applications and I’m using lots of Google software on my new PC configuration. I now run Google Desktop with the sidebar setup to read my news and manage my calendar and my to do list. I am using Google Alerts for my blogging notifications and I have all of my emails forwarded to my Google accounts. I do still use Thunderbird to read all my emails and for local archiving purposes. I have years worth of contacts built into this and I doubt I’ll be changing anytime soon. GMAIL keeps a copy of most of my mail online for me but I keep ready access for offline use.

I have been using Firefox for quite some time and I have the Google Toolbar installed on this computer. I don’t use it on all because they can track my sites across the accounts and I try to conceal my site ownership from Google as best I can. I do use Google Analytics on a number of my sites and I have those tied to just the one Gmail account. I am working on a mobile paperless business and online document storage is my next move. I’m going to have a copy of this blog post archived in my Google account and it will post to my Wordpress backed blog at AffordableWebPro.com.

I can re -edit this document at a later time and publish changes accordingly. I like the idea of duplicated data backups and this keeps multiple copies of all of my work online for me. I am also hoping to move all of my invoicing and billing documents over time and this is just a primer on using Google business applications and another step away from the MS monster. I hope to use all open source applications with the goal of tying my network of machines together and syncing and archiving everything properly.

I have installed the Google Browser Sync extension for Firefox 2.0 and configured it to share my Bookmarks and browser settings across multiple units locally and when I begin to move around I’ll have it loaded on other PC’s as we travel for our upcoming adventures in Jamaica. I now have access to my Bookmarks and site accounts from any PC that allows me to install and run Google Browser Sync. I’ve had it up and running for a week now and the only trouble is with signing in and out every time I close the browser window. My Firefox passwords are protected and each new window load requires a login that has gotten to be a drag but I guess that the price I pay for security.

Wordpress installations made easier with WPZipper.com

May 10th, 2007

I just found the coolest website for Wordpress developers like us. WPZipper.com allows you to download the latest version of Wordpress software along wqith your favorite plugins all in in one easy to use zip file. I just picked up a clean install of wordpress 2.1.3 with 80 plugins for a total of 6.2mb in under 2 minutes after finding the site. All I need now is to add my favorite pack of Wordpress themes and bang. I have an instant bloginstall. Super sweet!

wpzipper blog » About

f you build websites using WordPress, your life is about to get a lot easier.

It’s simple. wpzipper lets you quickly and easily generate a fresh WordPress installation zip file complete with all the plugins you want–already in the right place. Or, you can generate a “plugins-only” zip file that contains just the plugins you’ve selected without the WordPress files.

Why?

I created wpzipper because I find myself installing WordPress quite often. Every time, I have to go digging for the right plugins, download them all, unzip them, then upload them to my server. If you use a lot of plugins, this can be quite time consuming.

I thought– wouldn’t it be easier if I could just grab a fresh copy of WordPress with the plugins I wanted already in their right place? Well, it is, and that is just what wpzipper lets you do.

Link spamming tips from a pro

May 6th, 2007

Looking for tips on spamming links? It’s a favorite search for many and link spamming techniques are as hot as ever. Links spam has been taken to a whole new level with blogs and you can just about guarantee that any blog installation will have to face comment spam and link spam to every form on the site. We have just over 2 dozen blogs online now and in total we receive about 1000 spam link submissions of various types to all sites in total. It’s a heavy load to deal with and just a few days off not deleting comments can clog up a page. Some say drop comments altogether but we do find use for them on some of our sites and would hope to not to have to concede to these villains.

That’s right villains. You’ll find no tips here on how to link spam or comment spam here. What you will find is this tip. Don’t do it. Don’t waste your efforts. This may have worked at some point but all it does now is redflag your site and eventually it will get you blacklisted. You say Google says they won’t but let’s be honest they are in a battle to weed out garbage and even an enemy or competing site can take you out with some comment spam if your site is not 100% seo friendly and spam free.

My advice is but an echo of all the others that frown upon comment spam and the troubles in dealing with it. It’s a scourcge and useless and a marketing tool for sites with any long term plans.

Using auto blog and ping plus original content to bring in the spiders

May 6th, 2007

I’ve been playing around with autoblog plugins for Wordpress and I really like the AutoBlog plugin for totally auto updates to your site. The Feedpress plugin works well but I’m having issues with the cron function and its not full automated. I use the Feedpress plugin for sites that I update manually or more often and the Autoblog manages sites I don’t post to as often.

The testing has included watching the sites for spider activity to determine if we’re getting visiits from the search engines. it seems the autoblogging sites don’t get quite as much spider traffic as the manually updated sites and I think this has to do with the amount of original content on each site. The suto blog sites are 1 to 5 original works versus copied from the web posts we receive from various RSS feeds online. the autoblog have som activity and burstgs after each post but th spiders don’t stick around and it must be because of the duplicated content factor. One blog posts with all original work I have found a better placement in the engines muh faster although autoblogged content will rank for me.

I thiknk overall the ranking ahs to do more with inbound links to an article than the content itself. Yes content is still king but the number of inbound links is the size of your kingdom and the more the better.

Using Google Documents to manage my online business

April 20th, 2007

I’ve been thinking a lot about how to improve my business and one of the thoughts has been to move most of it online. I am trying to simplify my business and I believe that by using more tools online I can have more flexibility in how I manage not only my business but my personal life as well.

I’ve been a big fan of Google since like early 2000 and use it for my primary search tool as well as my email service provider now. I have considered using the full suite of applications available from them now and with the new improvements in the Google Apps programs I am now taking a look at using their online services for more of my document processing. Actually this blog post is one of my first tasks with the Google Docs functions. I am creating a new text document to be saved here in my Google account and I am posting it using the enhanced features and blog API which works not only with your Blogger.com accounts hosted by Google but also with my own custom server and Wordpress installation. It tied right into my existing blog using the Wordpress XMLRPC functions and now not only are my blog posts cached in my blog software but I have a copy in my Google account as well. I’m really starting to understand the importance of data duplication and having my documents cached in multiple locations is just plain safer for my business.

For now I am only going to use the public features of Google Apps because of my concerns with loading up all my business templates online. I will not be using any online documetns for any financial aspects of my business just yet. I’ll have to first test the waters and see how I feel about that. My main concern would be in exposing sensitive data to the general web. I am however hopeful for one added benefit. I am thinking that there may be a small boost in search engines with Google reading the pages it publishes and I am wondering how they will rank a site using all of their tools to publish and manage. For now Google documents will serve as my testing grounds for software as a service. I now have 3 PC’s to manage for my business and centralizing my documents is the next step in streamlining things.

Get listed in DMOZ.org for sure SEO results

March 16th, 2007

What’s the best way to get a decent PR rank and keep it? Well some may argue this point with my but I must say that a sure way to keep a decent PR rank is to get you site listed in the Open Directory project. The debate on how important this is has gone on for ages and will most likely continue but in my opinion its a no brainer. All of my best ranked sites are listed in DMOZ.org and have been for a long time. The longer a site is listed the better it seems to go as well.

I have one site that has been listed in DMOZ for over 4 years now and this site gets regualr visits from the Google Bot and has a PR5 with only 8 total inbound links to the site. All the other links are under PR2 and almost useless reall. The onlye page with a decent rank is our DMOZ listing and thats it. All the rest are link swaps and other directories. This site has mot been heavily promoted or even advertised ever but it’s had this PR5 for over 3 years no based almost purely on the DMOZ listing.

What good is a PR5 on this site? Well it maintains about $100 per month in inbound link sales from TextlinkBrokers.com and I sell blog posts on it now for $20 each with 3 links. I have been averaging over 10 posts per month a this rate and thats another $200 each month for my writing and the PR from this site.

Article writing and submission for link building

March 3rd, 2007

Article writing has been around as a website marketing technique but it’s still one of the most underused methods for building quality inbound links from relevant sources. The links you get from submitting free articles to directories online are a great way to boost your site and increase your link popularity. Get fresh search engine spider visits each and every day with a steady source of inbound links.

Many webmasters are tech happy programmers that would much rather sink deep into some programming language but few have the skills to write on a variety of subjects. If you can write a 300 to 500 word article on a topic to your website then you can create some free link building opportunities by submitting your new content to article directories that will offer them to other webmasters in search of new content for their sites.

Webmasters using your content are required to link back to your website and there lies the value to you. If you can write quality articles that are syndicated by larger websites you can find yourself not only with some great inbound links but a few clicks as well and the new source of traffic to your site is always a welcome addition. Try some of the top article sites online such as EzineArticles.com and submit a quality well written article on your website topic and watch the inbound links grow.
